Visualising Speciation in Models of Cichlid Fish
نویسنده
چکیده
An Agent-Based model of speciation in cichlid fish has been implemented. When run, this generates large amounts of trace data in which speciation is an implicit, near unobservable, processes. Fuzzy C-Means Clustering is used to identify species extant at the end of simulation, and the power set of these species is the potential set of ancestral species. Membership values for all fish in each of these theoretical ancestral species are calculated, and total set membership for each of these species is plotted against time. The resulting graph is to be a clear visualisation of the process of speciation, and the appearance and disappearance of intermediate species. Our approach allows the visualisation of speciation resulting in larger numbers of final species than was possible using previous techniques based on measuring correlations between explicit properties of modeled organisms, and is also unaffected by changes to the properties used to model fish.

Inheritance of female mating preference in a sympatric sibling species pair of Lake Victoria cichlids: implications for speciation.
Female mate choice has often been proposed to play an important role in cases of rapid speciation, in particular in the explosively evolved haplochromine cichlid species flocks of the Great Lakes of East Africa. Little, if anything, is known in cichlid radiations about the heritability of female mating preferences. Entirely sympatric distribution, large ecological overlap and conspicuous differ...
متن کاملGenome mapping of the orange blotch colour pattern in cichlid fishes.
The dramatic variation of cichlid fish colour pattern is thought to function in mate choice, evolve by sexual selection, and contribute to explosive speciation. Here, we combine linkage mapping and population genetic analyses to identify a single region of the cichlid genome responsible for the orange blotch (OB) colour phenotype. In each analysis, OB is tightly linked to the c-ski1 gene. Addit...
متن کاملThe Role of microRNAs in the Repeated Parallel Diversification of Lineages of Midas Cichlid Fish from Nicaragua
Cichlid fishes are an ideal model system for studying biological diversification because they provide textbook examples of rapid speciation. To date, there has been little focus on the role of gene regulation during cichlid speciation. However, in recent years, gene regulation has been recognized as a powerful force linking diversification in gene function to speciation. Here, we investigated t...

Rapid speciation has fascinated biologists for a long time. A recent study shows that ecological opportunity and sex-biased color differences increase the likelihood of speciation in African cichlid fishes.
متن کاملThe Adaptive Radiation of Cichlid Fish in Lake Tanganyika: A Morphological Perspective
Lake Tanganyika is the oldest of the Great Ancient Lakes in the East Africa. This lake harbours about 250 species of cichlid fish, which are highly diverse in terms of morphology, behaviour, and ecology. Lake Tanganyika's cichlid diversity has evolved through explosive speciation and is treated as a textbook example of adaptive radiation, the rapid differentiation of a single ancestor into an a...
